'Look Mummy, I turned on my listening ears!' - Blackpool Family Hubs help children prepare for school

“Eric was so excited to go to school on his first day. He came home saying, ‘Mummy, I turned on my listening ears just like we practised!’, which really hit home to me how much he had learned and picked up from the Ready Steady School sessions.”

Blackpool Family Hubs sessions are helping children build the skills needed for starting school as parents are reminded to apply for September 2027 places.

Blackpool Family Hubs’ free Ready Steady School sessions help children prepare for Reception through six weeks of fun, play-based activities that build confidence and encourage independence.

Children practise everyday skills such as recognising their name, putting on and taking off their coat, personal hygiene and using the toilet. Sessions also help develop hand and finger strength, listening skills and attention during circle time.

Lisa, mum of four-year-old Eric, attended Ready Steady School sessions at Central Family Hub this year. She said: “The sessions at the Family Hub were run so well, and the staff were brilliant.

“Eric was so excited to go to school on his first day. He came home saying, ‘Mummy, I turned on my listening ears just like we practised!’, which really hit home to me how much he had learned and picked up from the Ready Steady School sessions.”

Cllr Jim Hobson, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services added: “It’s great to see the difference our Family Hubs sessions are making for children who started school this September. Hearing Eric’s story is a testament to the work that has been done in collaboration with Better Start and our Best Start in Life offer.

“Starting school is a big milestone, and these sessions help children build the everyday skills and confidence they need to get the most out of learning in the classroom. It’s a fun way for parents and children to prepare for that exciting next step together.

“Although September 2027 might feel a long way off, I’d encourage parents to sign up for Ready Steady School early.”

No booking is required to attend, just turn up at one of the timetabled sessions at any of our Family Hubs. More information can be found here.
