Listing for historic Fylde coast institute

The Ansdell Institute in Woodlands Road was listed by English Heritage due to its “architectural rarity” and community value.

Paul Drinnan, Fylde Council’s regeneration manager, said: “The building is highly distinctive inside and out and features a function room, classrooms and a meeting room – and has been little changed since it was first built.

“The Listing application was made by Lytham St Annes Civic Society and supported by Fylde Council as recognition of its unique contribution to the appearance of Woodlands Road.

“Almost 200 buildings in Fylde are now Listed as being of national significance and people in Fylde should be proud of that.”

Designed by famous Manchester architect GH Willoughby and featuring high-quality, external terracotta decoration by sculptor JJ Millson, the Institute was built in 1909 for a total cost of £4,500.

Marion Coupe, chairman of Lytham St Annes Civic Society, added: “We are delighted to have this news.

“Ansdell can be proud that such a great building has been recognised.

“It is encouraging that so many people once again take a pride both in the fine community buildings and equally well designed historic private housing we have in Lytham St Annes. We have a lovely town.”
