Key update to planned finish date for Staining roadworks amid major reconstruction project
A County Councillor has provided a key update.
Road works on Chain Lane in Staining have been revised, with the full reconstruction now scheduled to continue until 30 November 2026, according to County Councillor John Singleton, Fylde West Division.
The works are required because of significant road subsidence at multiple locations along Chain Lane, with Lancashire Highways carrying out urgent repairs to ensure the continued safety of the highway network.
Temporary traffic signals will initially be in operation for approximately two weeks, from 7 September until 21 September 2026. During this period, Lancashire Highways will undertake essential stabilisation and reconstruction works to address the underlying issues causing the carriageway failure.

The initial works will include the construction of a retaining wall along the side of the carriageway using MSC bags to stabilise the embankment. Initial excavation and reinstatement works will also take place during the first two weeks to provide immediate support and prepare the site for the full reconstruction.
From 21 September until 30 November 2026, a full-depth carriageway reconstruction will then take place over approximately 120 metres, covering the full width of the road.
According to the information provided by Councillor Singleton, investigations and an assessment of the extent of the subsidence have found that there is no viable alternative to excavating and reconstructing the full carriageway section in order to provide a long-term and sustainable repair.
Councillor Singleton said: "I appreciate your patience and understanding while these essential works are carried out. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption; however, delays should be expected whilst the temporary traffic management is in place. I am aware, as a result of the many emails, I can't please all residents and commuters ."
Councillor Singleton said his priority was ensuring the road provided a long-term solution for the local community. He said: "My main priorities are the residents who live in Staining and neighbouring villages who will be able to use this road for another 20+ years.
“As I said previously this result has taken 4 years, working with the previous highways manager at the Singleton Depot,” he added. “The current manager manager will confirm this.”

School bus arrangements
Changes have also been outlined for the school bus service to Poulton during the period of the full road closure. From 21 to 30 November 2026, the school bus service to Poulton will call at the Staining bus turn-around near the Village Hall.
From there, the service will stop at the normal school bus stops in Chain Lane and Staining Road before continuing its route to Poulton. The same route will be followed after school. The school has been made aware of the road closure.
Councillor Singleton thanked residents and commuters for their understanding while the essential works are carried out.
