Keeping it fit after Rio
A new sports event is coming to Fylde - hot on the heels of the Olympics being held in Rio and designed to encourage people of all ages to get active, get healthy and get outdoors.
Lytham Sportfest, to be held next month, is a community project which aims to harness interest and provide opportunities for people to try a new activity or join a club.
With funding from Fylde Council’s Fylde Community Funding Project, and sponsorship from The Therapy Company and Grant Smith Physio, Sportfest will boast activities for all the family - and, with the exception of a few events, everything will be free.
The Queen Elizabeth II Playing Fields at Park View will host many of the events, with Lytham YMCA and Lytham hall also venues.
The sports festival, scheduled for August 27 and 28, is the brainchild of Mark Selby, a keen runner who was born in Lytham and has lived in the town all his life.
He said: “I believe we have so much to offer in terms of sports activities and clubs in the local area and I wanted to bring as many as possible together in one place to show the public anyone can have a go.”
The events will include: Sunrise Yoga, Lytham Green - 6am, both days; Football, Park View with AFC Fylde - Aug 27 10am to 4pm; Lytham’s Biggest Boot Camp at Park View – Aug 27 2pm; Orienteering, Lytham Hall - Aug 27 10.30am to 3.30pm; Metafit high-intensity session, Park View - both days 3pm; BMX, Park View - both days 9am to 5pm; Zumba, Park View - both days 11am to noon; Nordic Walking, Lytham Hall - Aug 27 11am to 1pm; Running Assault, Park View - both days 10am to 4pm; Free Gym, Lytham YMCA – both days; Junior Yoga, Park View - both days 11am to 3pm; Golf Showcase, Park View - both days 11am to 3pm.
Mark added: “There is definitely something for everyone!”
Lytham Sportfest has also signed up to be part of I Am Team GB, a nationwide sports day taking place on Saturday, August 27, and promoted by ITV and the National Lottery.
There will also be stalls and entertainment for all the family at Park View and sponsores and volunters are invited.
