Jail break man caught

John Hughes told police when he was captured that he “did not like what was going on” in Kirkham Prison, so he decided to leave.

He had been serving a sentence of nine years six months for conspiracy to supply cocaine and was near the end of his term.

Hughes, 31, of Sheildhill Gardens, Aberdeen, pleaded guilty to being unlawfully at large.

He was sentenced to four months in prison and ordered to pay £80 victims’ surcharge with a £150 court charge by Blackpool magistrates.

Pam Smith, prosecuting, said Hughes failed to return after temporary leave from Kirkham Prison last October 21.

On April 24 this year police in Scotland received information that a Range Rover Sport entering Lothian from the Forth Bridge was being driven by Hughes.

Mitch Sarangi, sending, told magistrates: “I understand that he was a model prisoner. He says there were problems affecting him at the prison.”
