Inquest to go ahead into death of 71-year-old cancer patient at Blackpool Victoria Hospital

Coroner wants detailed statement on events before, during and after scan

An inquest is to be held into the death of a 71-year-old woman under treatment for lung cancer who died at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

Jacqueline Thompson died in January from asphyxia caused by aspiration of gastric content after she vomited on the way back from a CT scan.

Her family expressed concerns over monitoring of her following the scan which preceded her death

They had also pointed out at a previous pre-inquest review that she had vomited following a CT scan some months earlier after suffering an adverse reaction to CT contrasts - special dye used to highlight specific organs, blood vessels or tissues on scan images.

Blackpool and Fylde chief coroner Alan Wilson asked at that earlier review hearing at Blackpool Town Hall for more information before he decided whether or not to proceed with an inquest.

Now, at a second review, Mr Wilson has confirmed that an inquest is to be ahead, on a date to be set.

He said it will concentrate on the care received at the hospital in the immediate run-up to her death rather than looking into any previous instances of reaction to the contrasts.

Mr Wilson has received a nursing report regarding the events at the time of the scan but he asked Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust representative at the review, Lyn Ajanaku, for a more detailed one.

He said he wanted to a statement from the nurse who accompanied Mrs Thompson to the scanner room and what happened before, during and after the scan
