Inquest put back as coroner and family consider Blackpool Victoria Hospital review after death of woman, 74

Sally Strong was in hospital for the removal of a tumour

An inquest into the death of a 74-year-old woman following an operation at Blackpool Victoria Hospital has been put back to allow a coroner and the family of the dead woman to consider a review of the case carried out at the hospital.

A pre-inquest review into the death of Sally Strong in March heard that a provisional date the inquest had been set for November but was now likely to take place early next year.

Blackpool and Fylde senior coroner Alan Wilson, confirming at the review hearing that an inquest would take place, said a copy of the hospital case review had just been received and he needed to allow adequate time for it to be fully considered, by him and by Ms Strong’s family.

Ms Strong had been admitted to hospital last December for a laparotomy procedure to remove an abdominal tumour but died after her condition deteriorated.

A post mortem found she died of multi-organ failure brought on by septicaemia caused by a peritoneal abscess.

Pathologist Dr Darek Golka also found evidence of liver disease, the review hearing heard.
