I cycled from the Lake District to Poulton-le-Fylde in memory of my dad

Blackpool dad cycling 64 miles in memory of his father says he is “bursting with pride” as he and five friends set off from Ambleside this morning to raise funds for Trinity Hospice.

A group of six determined riders set off from Ambleside this morning on an emotional 64-mile journey back to the Fylde coast and for Danielle Jones, watching her husband leave was a moment filled with pride and nerves in equal measure.

Thomas Jones, 36, from Poulton, is cycling one mile for every year of his dad’s life after the 64-year-old died at Trinity Hospice in March last year, just weeks after being diagnosed with stage four oesophageal cancer.

Speaking shortly after the group left at around 9.20am, Danielle said the team were in “really good spirits” as they began the challenge.

She said: “They all looked amazing this morning. They’ve got matching jerseys and the bikes all lined up - it was such a lovely atmosphere before they set off.

“They’re doing incredible already. They’ve made their first pit stop and I’ve had videos of them heading out onto the second leg. Everyone seems really positive.”

The riders are being supported along the route by a family member travelling alongside in a vehicle packed with snacks, drinks and supplies, keeping loved ones updated with photos and videos throughout the day.

Danielle admitted it was an emotional send-off, particularly with the first anniversary of her father-in-law’s death approaching.

She said: “I’m just so proud of him. This means so much to our family. Trinity Hospice did everything for us in those final days.

“They gave us the chance to just be together and focus on being a family.

“For Tom to do this in his dad’s memory and to take on something so tough - it’s just incredible. His dad would be so proud.”

The weather conditions have so far been kind to the team with dry skies and light cloud cover, although rain is forecast later in the day.

The ride will finish at The Bull on Blackpool Old Road in Poulton, where supporters are expected to gather from around 5pm to cheer the cyclists across the line.

The group have already raised close to £2,000 for Trinity Hospice, which relies heavily on donations to continue providing specialist end-of-life care and ongoing family support.

As Danielle continues to receive updates from the road, she says the sense of togetherness around the challenge has already made a difference.

She said: “No matter what time they get back, we’ll all be there, It’s not just about the miles - it’s about remembering Dad and saying thank you to the people who looked after him so beautifully.

Hugo, Tom’s son said: “I was so emotional this morning but I’m so proud of you I know your dad would have been so happy.

“I know we all miss him but I know he’s nice and safe I’m so proud of you dad by the way well done.”
