I created a new mural at Whitegate Drive Health Centre inspired by Blackpool’s young people

A vibrant new mural at Whitegate Drive Health Centre has transformed a once clinical space into a colourful celebration of Blackpool.

Weeks of careful brushwork have been condensed into just a few minutes on film, but the impact of a new mural inside Whitegate Drive Health Centre will last far longer.

Created by local artist Adam Salisbury, the artwork is more than just decoration. It is a reflection of identity, emotion and place - designed by the young people who use the facility, for the young people who need it most.

Adam said: “I had a meeting with all the kids and they gave me their ideas. I went away and then sent them my designs and they chose one for me to paint.

“They wanted calming colours, a nice scene to relax, a bit of colour and inspirational quotes.

“It’s been a pleasure painting at Whitegate Drive Health Centre it’s a memory I will never forget.”

The project began with a simple idea: to turn a plain, clinical wall into something warmer and more welcoming. Through creative sessions, children and young adults shared what Blackpool meant to them.

Their ideas shaped every element of the final piece. From the rise of the iconic tower to the flowing lines of the promenade, the mural captures the spirit of the seaside town in bold, abstract form.

Adam, who has worked on a number of projects across Blackpool’s healthcare settings, said the reaction from those involved made the work especially meaningful with many feeling proud to see their ideas brought to life.

The mural was created over several long sessions using a mix of tools and techniques to build texture and depth. But beyond the technical detail, its purpose is simple: to change how the space feels.

Healthcare environments can often feel overwhelming, particularly for younger patients. By bringing colour, creativity and a sense of familiarity indoors the mural helps create a calmer, more positive atmosphere.

For Adam, it stands out as one of his most memorable works - not because of its size or complexity, but because it truly belongs to the people it was made for.
