Humour highlights potholes situation across Fylde

But in Poulton, Thornton and Cleveleys, drivers are also seeing the funny side of the state of the county’s highways.

Littered across social media sites are photoshopped images cracking a joke at the craters.

In one picture a scuba diver pops up from one water-logged hole in the road.

In another a man takes a refreshing dip after parking his motorbike. And in another a pair of green wellies are propped up upsidedown with a quip, ‘local resident looking into the pothole problem’.

But the photos are also prompting residents in the area to share their more serious stories of the blight of potholes since the weather over winter has ripped the roads up.

David Walmsley said: “I’m normally quite sane – that was until I saw the pothole repairers on South Avenue, Cleveleys yesterday engaging in a spot of window dressing.

“Prior to their visit the surface they had already been patched 121 times over a distance of 150 yards. They have now added a further 21.”

Kristianne Hammond said: “Drove down Cumberland Avenue today and was amazed at the amount of potholes! Especially near the North Drive junction.”

Stephen Moulding said: “Maybe we should go back to cobbled streets – less damaging to your tyres.”

James Middelmass said: “This pothole on Princess Avenue was filled in no more than 12 months ago and now it’s back.”

But Lancashire County Council has said it has earmarked £5m to tackle the problems.

County Councillor Keith Iddon, Lancashire County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “The wet and freezing weather we’ve experienced in the last few weeks has led to an increase in potholes, as is the case every winter, and our teams are working hard to repair them.

“As the weather improves there will be fewer potholes appearing. However, our priority is to keep our roads in a safe condition and respond as quickly as we can.”
