Historic Blackpool heritage trams return to Promenade as Lightpool Festival begins

Running from October 21 to 31, Lightpool marks its 10th anniversary with 11 nights of free-to-see entertainment across Blackpool.

Commuters in Blackpool were greeted by a familiar sight this morning as the illuminated Western Train returned to the Promenade ahead of the start of Lightpool Festival 2026.

The historic tram was put into position near North Pier early this morning, where it will remain on display throughout the festival, which runs from October 21 to 31.

Frigate, better known as HMS Blackpool, will also be on display outside Starr Gate depot during the festival. Visitors can see the tram every night from 6.30pm to 10.30pm up to and including October 24. From October 25, the display times will change to 5.30pm to 10.30pm each night.

The displays offer an opportunity to celebrate two of Blackpool’s much-loved trams while work continues to get them safely back into service. Blackpool Council, Blackpool Transport and the heritage tram team are working together to return the vehicles to the tracks safely, while also seeking to establish a heritage visitor attraction.

The temporary displays are not intended as a substitute for returning the trams to service. Instead, they provide an opportunity to celebrate the vehicles, demonstrate that they remain in Blackpool and continue to be cared for, and highlight the ongoing commitment to preserving the town’s tram heritage.

Thanks have also been extended to the volunteers who have worked tirelessly to ensure both the Western Train and Frigate are ready to go on display. The trams’ return comes as Blackpool prepares to welcome visitors for Lightpool Festival 2026, the town’s annual celebration of light, art and creativity.

Running from October 21 to 31, the festival marks its 10th anniversary with 11 nights of free-to-see entertainment across Blackpool, with activities taking place from 6pm to 9pm each night. This year’s programme features 30 artworks, including 10 world premieres, alongside light-based art installations, lasers, live performances, family-friendly activities and 3D projection shows.
