Hendry admits drink driving charge

The 49-year-old father of four was caught just under double the legal limit in the early hours of February 21 in Church Road, Lytham.

Hendry, who captained his country and enjoyed a long Premiership career, was arrested as he drove to his house on Coopers Row.

Hendry parted company with his last job in football last year when he left a post as Blackburn Rover’s youth coach.

He pleaded guilty to drink-driving at Blackpool Magistrates Court, with a breath reading of 63 microgrammes – the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

His lawyer told the court there was a possibility Hendry’s drinks may have been “laced” on the night he was pulled up.

Sentence was adjourned by the court after his lawyer Gwynn Lewis said his client accepted he will be banned from the roads.

He added: “We say that there was a possibility that there was alcohol in his body which he was not aware or that there is disparity in the figure because of his metabolism.

“We have asked an expert to investigate these matters,

“We would like this adjournment for a special reasons hearing. We can produce receipts for what Mr Hendry drank that night.

“He may have to attend a laboratory to recreate what he drank that night.”

Magistrates agreed to the application and the case was adjourned until April 22.
