It got underway after a resident living in a flat near the Metropole hotel in North Shore said he spotted a man walking into the water at low tide, at around 9.30am.

Lifeboats from Blackpool, Lytham, and Fleetwood's RNLI stations were called out, as were Coastguard rescuers from Lytham, Fleetwood, and Knott End, and two helicopters.

Police officers also helped.

Despite an intensive search, which was carried out amid rough seas, with three-metre waves, the man remained missing.

The search had been scaled back by 1.30pm, with the water beating against the sea wall, before it was called off after around seven hours of looking.

At around 10.30pm, once the tide has receded, a search of the beach could be carried out, The Gazette understood.

However, it remains a possibility that the man left the water unseen prior to emergency services arriving.
