The announcement of his appointment to the helm of St John’s Ravencourt School in Winnipeg next summer comes within months of him successfully seeing through the highly-controversial merger of King Edward and Queen Mary School with Blackpool’s Arnold.

Mr Keefe, headmaster of Arnold since 2010, had his role extended to the joint school after the merger with KEQMS was announced the following year.

The merger plan, which included the closure of Arnold’s site in Blackpool’s South Shore, prompted a long protest campaign by KEQMS parents but it came into effect in September last year, initially on the two sites before all pupils came together at the Clifton Drive South campus last September.

Mr Keefe will remain in post until next July and what local governing body chairman Jerry Wooding terms in a letter to parents ‘a rigorous national recruitment process’ will take place to find his successor.
