Gouldian finches favor enclosed, dark spaces for laying their eggs which can make feeding their chicks a tricky task.

But nature, as always has a solution. The newly hatched chicks sport bright, contrasting markings around their beaks.

These markings act almost like miniature runway lights, illuminating the chicks’ mouths and helping parents find them in the dim nest environment.

Keeper Kylie, who has been closely monitoring the aviary, said in a Facebook post: “Hatching season has begun Gouldian finches prefer enclosed, dark nesting spaces and because of this, their chicks have evolved some rather unique markings around their beaks.

“The bright mouth markings act like tiny runway lights, guiding parents straight to the hungry mouths of their chicks in the dark.”

The markings are not just pretty - they are essential. In the wild, where nests can be cramped and hidden, these vivid beak patterns ensure that the chicks get the nourishment they need to grow strong and healthy.

Observers at the aviary have captured the behaviour on video revealing the precision with which adult finches respond to the visual cues of their young.

As the season progresses, visitors can expect to see more of these fascinating interactions. Hatching season offers a rare glimpse into the intimate world of Gouldian finches and a reminder of how evolution shapes even the tiniest details of life.

With chicks displaying their glowing beak markings, it’s clear that nature’s ingenuity is alive and well in the aviary.

Last year was a record year for Blackpool Zoo with more visitors passing through the gates than at any point in its 53-year history, helped in part by the birth of an adorable elephant calf Zaiya and several other new arrivals.

Looking ahead to 2026, Blackpool have invested more than £500,000 in the new Kidepo Trail, expanding their giraffe habitat and creating a high-level walkway for a more immersive visitor experience.
