New Fylde Council banners celebrate golf legend Ernie Els' 2012 Royal Lytham & St Annes Open Championship

“Next time you're in town, take a look and let us know which banner is your favourite!”

New banners celebrating "everything that makes Fylde special" have been unveiled in St Annes.

The first banner design, unveiled today, pays tribute to golfing legend Ernie Els, who claimed his second Claret Jug at the 141st Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in July 2012, ahead of the return of The Open Championship to the area in 2028.

Els secured victory with a final-round 68 to finish on seven under par, capitalising on a dramatic late collapse by long-time leader Adam Scott, who bogeyed the final four holes. The new display comes as Royal Lytham & St Annes prepares to host The Open once again in two years’ time, marking the championship's return to the prestigious course for the first time since Els' victory.

The tournament is expected to deliver a significant economic boost to Fylde, attracting thousands of visitors, golf fans and media from around the world while showcasing the area on a global stage.

“Featuring stunning coastal and rural landscapes, arts and culture, local events, and our fantastic facilities, the banners showcase the very best of the borough,” the statement continued. “The banners will be brightening up St Annes for the next 12 months, adding colour and helping to create an even warmer welcome for residents and visitors alike.
