Funding boosts across resort

More than 120 schemes in the North West have been supported in the latest awards from the Big Lottery Fund, totalling £3.9m throughout the region.

Activate Community Events community interest company has been awarded £10,000, for a winter project for families in the Claremont area.

Joe Lavelle, who runs the organisation, said it put on a number of activities to “keep young people off the streets”.

The cash will be used to fund a 10-week project called Bouncing in Claremont Community, beginning in January, with bouncy castles, inflatables and games in Claremont Park’s old library.

Joe said: “It makes a huge difference to children.

“Police have reported after the events there is less anti-social behaviour, and we are working hard at cohesion between the age groups.”

The project begins on January 12, 5pm to 8pm.

Mental health organisation Blackpool Inspirations has been awarded £8,600 to pay for professional support, and to fund trips and activities.

Trustee Carol Wilson, who works alongside fellow trustee Steven Royle, said the organisation was needed within the community following the closure of other services.

Members of the group meet at venues across the resort, and go on trips and take part in various sessions.

Carol said: “It is unique what we are doing, because it’s been set up by service users.

“This money will make a big difference.”

Tidal Beats has been awarded £9,972 to fund a fortnightly “drum circle” and a residential weekend, aiming to bring people together to reduce social isolation through the building of friendships.

And Elswick Youth Club has been awarded £10,000 to maintain and expand the youth club provision, to strengthen the community by “diverting young people from negative and anti-social behaviour”.
