Football stadium plan given green light

AFC Fylde could start work on a new 6,000 capacity stadium at Mill Farm as early as February after Government planning chiefs last night gave the plan the go ahead.

Plans for the Fleetwood Road project were provisionally agreed by councillors earlier this year.

But due to the size of the project, a final ruling had to be made by the Secretary of State Eric Pickles’ National Planning Unit (NPU).

The development will provide a new stadium for AFC Fylde, as well as more than 200 jobs at the 32-acre site.

Club chairman David Haythornthwaite said today: “This is a fantastic outcome for the football club and also for everyone who has worked hard over the past few months to get us to where we are today.

“This will hopefully be a nice Christmas present for the fans.”

The club are confident that building work on the stadium the will be able to start as early as the first week in February and will take up to 12 months to complete.

Mr Haythornwaite added: “We’re always trying to take the club forward and we’re in a great position on the footballing side so we’ve got to give the manager and the players a great ground to play in and that’s always been our aim.

“Hopefully by this time next year we could be playing there which will be great.”

A campaign group, Save Wesham and Kirkham, was set up by residents concerned with over-development in the area, but the chief executive of Mill Farm Ventures, James French, said an opinion poll earlier this year showed support for the project
