Engineers from Electricity North West, the region’s power network operator, will start to replace the aging underground power cables which have been supplying power to customers in the area for more than 80 years.

Temporary traffic lights will be put in place at times during the works – but Electricity North West is as-yet unable to name the streets which will be affected – or when.

The essential five-month project will install 2km of new underground electricity cables which will help ensure Fleetwood residents continue to receive a reliable power supply now and in the future.

Paul McGonigle, programme delivery manager for Electricity North West, said: “We’re delighted to be able to invest in Fleetwood’s power network and this essential project will keep the lights on for hundreds of customers for decades to come.

“We work hard to ensure that North West homes and businesses receive the power they need every day and we will continue to invest in the power network to ensure we provide the best service to our customers.”

Coun Peter Murphy, cabinet member with responsibility for economic development at Wyre Council, said: “I welcome this investment into the modernisation of Fleetwood’s power network and its good news for local homes and businesses.”

“It’s always encouraging to see that kind of investment on key services in the town.”

And Coun Mike Barrowclough, who represent’s Wyre’s Rossall ward in Fleetwood, said: “It’s good to get some positive news at the moment and this investment will hopefully add to the reliability of our electricity network in Fleetwood.”

The work will be carried out in phases and stop over the festival holidays to keep any disruption in the town to a minimum.
