A 27-year-old man from Ansdell, three men aged 23, 24 and 37 from Swinton, Manchester and a 27-year-old man from Salford have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery.

The armed robbery took place on November 26 around 8.15pm when three men wearing high-visibility vests and balaclavas targeted the Santander Bank on Clifton Street as two G4S security guards were filling a cash machine.

During the frightening incident raiders used sledgehammers and axes to smash the glass in the front door and force their way in. They made off with cassettes from an ATM located inside the bank containing an undisclosed sum of money.

Fortunately the two security guards did not suffer any physical injury, although they were left shaken.

Det Insp Gareth Willis said: “This was a serious offence in which two security guards were subjected to a terrifying ordeal and a large sum of money was stolen.

“Today’s arrests are a significant development but our investigation is still on-going and I would continue to appeal to anybody with any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward.”
