Family pays tribute to footballer who died in crash

The family of former Premier League footballer Jlloyd Samuel have paid tribute to him after he died in a collision in High Legh.

The 37-year-old from Leigh, who played for Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers in the Premier League and represented the Trinidad and Tobago international team, was driving a Range Rover that was involved in a collision with a van on West Lane at around 7.55am on Tuesday 15 May.

In a statement, the father-of-four’s family said: “Jlloyd was a loving son, father, husband and brother.

“He was also a respected ex-footballer and businessman who played for a number of clubs.

“He was extremely popular and well-loved by all who were fortunate to know him.

“Jlloyd leaves behind a family including a wife and four children who are devastated by their sudden loss.

“The family at this time respectfully request to be left alone so they can have time to grieve and mourn his passing.”

The man who was driving the van was taken to hospital after sustaining serious injuries.

The 54-year-old, from Chester, remains in a serious condition in hospital.
