Fairhaven re-opens following algae woe

Fairhaven Lake was closed to the public on Friday, June 20, after the algae, which sucks oxygen out of the water, caused the deaths of thousands of fish.

After closing the lake and turning on water fountains, the oxygen levels have now returned to normal levels, with the lake opened on Monday.

A Fylde Council spokesman said: “We lost a total of close to 1,300 fish.

“Just a small part of the lake has a red tinge and the smell has disappeared, so we have re-opened the boats and it’s back to normal.

“Staff have been working 24 hours a day to ensure the fountains continued to aerate the lake. It has been hard work, but we are pleased to open again.”
