Stephen Chamberlain has applied to Blackpool Council for permission to make alterations to the former Action Exhausts building on George Street in the town.

He hopes to turn the now empty garage into a nursery catering for up to 24 children aged between two and four.

The applicant also says a childcare facility is needed in the neighbourhood following the closure of the nursery at the Brunswick Sure Start Centre last year.

Parents protested at the closure which was carried out by the council as part of budget cuts.

A design statement accompanying the application says: “The outlined proposal will convert a disused garage which is becoming an eyesore, into a well maintained asset to the community.

“With the closure of the nearby Sure Start facility due to budgetary considerations it seems an ideal opportunity to reinstate some of these lost childcare places.

“The conversion would also remove another industrial building from an area that is being progressively redeveloped as a residential area.

“Along a similar vein, this increase in nearby housing will surely lead to an increased in the need for this type of facility.”

If it goes ahead, the scheme will see alterations made to the building including putting in new windows and doors, creating a garden area and constructing a canopy to front.

As far as possible, changes will be made to match the appearance of nearby properties.

The nursery would operate from 7.30am until 6pm, Monday to Friday.

The application will now go before town hall planners for consideration at a future date.
