Elderly motorist taken ill at wheel

An elderly man was taken to hospital after collapsing at the wheel of his car in Blackpool.

The driver, in his 70s, was at the traffic lights in Abingdon Street when he was taken ill.

Police and an Ambulance crew were called and the man was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “Officers were called to the scene at 12.20pm and found the driver of a black Hyundai i20 unconscious in the vehicle.

“He was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital. The car was in the road so it caused tailbacks in Abingdon Street.

“After he had been treated, police moved it to the side of the road to allow the traffic to flow once more.”

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service said: “An elderly man in his 70s was treated at the scene and then taken to Blackpool Victoria hospital.”
