Elio Dias, 29, of Derwent Drive, Freckleton, was not present at court but he pleaded guilty by letter to driving a VW Golf without due care and attention.

He was fined £60 with £85 costs, ordered to pay £20 victims’ surcharge and had six motoring penalty points put on his driving licence by Blackpool magistrates.

Andrew Robinson, prosecuting, said a cyclist was riding along Clifton Drive North, St Annes, when Dias turned across his path and hit him on August 19 at 5.45pm.

The cyclist was thrown over the car’s bonnet and landed on the road, dislocating his knee and suffering severe grazing and bruising.

Dias, who had a Portuguese licence, told police he had only recently come to the United Kingdom. He accepted he had caused the accident by emerging into the cyclist’s path.
