The victim told police he tried to suffocate her during the ordeal, during which he was drunk on vodka, the court heard.

Lewis, 24, of Jeffrey Square, Blackpool, had pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted rape.

The crime took place on October 11 last year and the prosecution said the woman had been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

A judge today gave Lewis an extended sentence of eight and a half years in jail, with two and half years licence to follow.

He will be on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
