10 delightful pictures as Our Lady Star of the Sea pupils in St Annes get close-up look at Open golf trophies

Pupils at a St Annes primary school were delighted to get a close-up look at two of the top trophies in world golf as well as being given the chance to try the game themselves.

To celebrate the Women’s Open tournament coming to Royal Lytham and St Annes - practically next to the school - this summer and the men’s Open being nearby at Royal Birkdale, Year 5 and 6 pupils at Our Lady Star of the Sea school were given a taster session from The Golf Foundation as well as being part of the Trophy Tour.

Both the Claret Jug and the AIG trophy were on view and the youngsters could have their photos taken with them.

The visit was part of ‘Road To The Opens’, an initiative designed to harness the legacy of both The Open and the AIG Women’s Open and inspire the next generation of young golfers.

Following the session, teachers from other schools in the area received training to take the programmes back for their pupils to try.

Our Lady Star of the Sea headteacher Natalie Gregan said: "Having the two iconic trophies from both the Men's and Women's Open on the school site was an incredible experience for our young people.

“We teach the children to dream big and believe that anything is possible; I think both trophies are testament to this and allow the children to aspire.

“We live in such a special part of the world in which we are lucky enough to be able to try a variety of top quality sports in our area, and golf is definitely part of this.

“The children really enjoyed the Unleash Your Drive programme they took part in. In today's modern world, mental resilience is so important for our young people - this programme thoroughly supports this.”
