Decision due for nightspot

The fate of a once popular Fylde coast club is finally set to be decided as a scheme to convert the site into nine flats is debated by councillors.

A project to redevelop the former Vogue Nightclub, in Back West Crescent, St Annes, was passed by council planners in October last year, but fresh plans to renovate the site were submitted in September by owner George Gillan.

The latest plans include a new layout for the apartments, featuring six two-bedroom and three one-bedroom flats, as well as new window arrangements and amendments to elevations.

Extensive work to clear the inside of the property has taken place, and now planners will discuss its redevelopment next week.

St Annes Town Council mayor Ed Nash said he welcomed the planned work: “The Vogue was only opening one night a week in the end.

“I do not know the detail on the development, but in principle it is a good idea.

“If the building is turned into nice mews apartments it will enhance the area.

“Town centre homes are increasingly popular and something I welcome.”

The club, which reopened in 2008, had been in the town for decades, but closed in March last year due to competition, including Toast Bar and Loft in Wood Street.

Fylde Council planning officer Ruth Thow has recommended the plans be approved, subject to certain conditions.

She said: “The revised plans have confirmed the size of the two-bedroom flats and these are considered to be adequate by the council’s housing officer.

“The property is located within the town centre, a sustainable location with good transport links.”

The fresh plans follow a community scheme to improve the look of Back West Crescent, which was launched this year.

In recent months, the street has undergone a transformation, including the planting of flowers by St Annes in Bloom and art displays by the Lytham St Annes Art Collection as part of the St Annes Art Trail.

The meeting to discuss the former nightspot will take place at Fylde town hall from 10am on Wednesday.
