Three arrested after high speed car chase ends in smash

One of the men was found hiding in a ditch after the police helicopter was called out at around midnight.

The chase started when police officers saw a black VW Golf being driven in a 'careless manner', a force spokesman said.

They turned their car around and were carrying out checks on the police radio when the Golf sped off, he added.

It ended in Whitehill Road, Marton, when car's driver failed to see fencing put up by United Utilities and smashed into it.

The trio inside the car abandoned it and fled, with two arrested shortly after. Officers found the third after searching the area.

All three were booked into custody.
