Police were called at around 10.15am to reports of an affray involving several people on Livingstone Road.

By the time officers attended, those involved had made off but short time later, police stopped a man believed to have been involved in the affray. He was found to be in possession of knives, machetes and class A drugs.

A police spokesman said officers also found an item in his possession which looked as if it may have been a home-made explosive device.

"As a precaution, a controlled explosion was carried out and a number of houses on Reads Avenue were evacuated," said the spokesman.

Reads Avenue was closed for a short time but reopened around 3.30pm.

A man, aged in his 40s and from Blackpool, was arrested on suspicion of affray and remains in police custody.

Two further men have since been arrested - a 19-year-old man on suspicion of affray and an 18-year-old on suspicion of drugs offences.

The police spokesman said they also remain in police custody
