This is why armed police were spotted in Fleetwood today

Armed police, sniffer dogs and officers from the Tactical Operations team were spotted responding to an incident in Fleetwood today (March 17).

Officers said they were called to reports a man had been seen holding an item, "possibly a firearm", in Northfleet Avenue at around midday.

Police, including armed officers, descended on the street before carrying out an extensive search of the area.

Following further enquiries the force said they do not believe the man was carrying a firearm or a weapon.

"Enquiries are ongoing to find the man but at this stage we do not believe there is any wider threat to the public," a spokesman for Lancashire Police said.
