Steven Kenna, 39, assault

A Blackpool Council refuse collector attacked a colleague after a feud between them boiled over.

Steven Kenna said after an argument the colleague had refused to speak to him.

And when the colleague criticised him about speaking on the phone to his ill mother he lost his temper.

Kenna, 39, of Kensington Place, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to assault.

He was given a 12 months conditional discharge and ordered to pay £50 compensation with £85 costs plus £21 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.

Prosecutor, Andrew Robinson, said the complainant claimed Kenna was late for work and smelt of alcohol on January 7.

At 8.45am the complainant told Kenna off for being on his phone.

The defendant then swung a punch at him which connected with his glasses.

Stephen Duffy, defending, said his client had worked as a refuse collector for nine years, having a good work record and getting on with colleagues. He was then swapped to a new crew and after having an argument with the complainant the complainant refused to speak to him.

The night before the offence Kenna had texted the complainant trying to smooth things over between them.

Kenna did not accept he was late or smelt of alcohol that day.

He had not drunk alcohol for days.

When the complainant decided it was a problem when Kenna made a call to his ill mother he lost his temper. Kenna had been dismissed from his job.

Paul Manning, 42, possessing cannabis with intent to supply

A man was caught dealing in cannabis after a friend he had given some of the drug to was searched by police.

Paul Manning, 42, of Cocker Street, North Shore, pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis with intent to supply the class B drug.

Prosecutor, Andrew Robinson, said police saw a woman go into Manning’s address on May 19.

When she came out she was searched and a snap bag of cannabis was found on her which she said Manning had given her.

Officers searched Manning’s home and found cannabis on the kitchen table, snap bags and scales.

Adam Whittaker, defending, told magistrates his client said he used cannabis daily and spent about £300 a month on it.

He had a small circle of friends he would give cannabis to at cost price. He had not made any money from the deals.

Manning was bailed to appear for sentence at Preston Crown Court on March 25.

David Penny, 37, driving while disqualified without insurance and driving with drugs in his system

A motorist who was banned from the road was caught driving with cannabis in his body.

David Penny got behind the wheel about five months after getting the ban.

Penny, 37, of Clare Street, South Shore, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified without insurance and driving with drugs in his system.

He was sentenced to a 12 months community order with up to 15 days rehabilitation to be supervised by the probation service, put on a four weeks curfew from 9pm to 7am, banned from the road for three years and ordered to pay £85 costs with £90 victims’ surcharge.

Prosecutor, Andrew Robinson, said police acting on information they had received stopped Penny as he drove a Vauxhall Zafira on Blackpool Promenade on September 27,

Checks showed he had been banned from the road in April for 12 months for an offence of driving with excess alcohol.

A blood test showed 4.9 units of cannabis in his body - two is the limit.

In a pre-sentence report to the court magistrates were told Penny was a full-time carer for his disabled stepson. The day of the offence Penny’s partner was organising a party and he drove to make it easier for his partner.

He had used the cannabis the previous evening.

Penny’s defence lawyer said his client described his behaviour as stupid.

Malcolm Boswell, 40, actual bodily harm

A Blackpool man has appeared at court charged with causing a woman actual bodily harm. Malcolm Boswell, 40, of Rose Avenue, is alleged to carried out the assault in August last year.

He denied the offence at Blackpool Magistrates court and he was bailed until his trial on April 30.

Anthony Morris, 31, assault

A man accused of assaulting his own mother has been remanded in custody.

Anthony Morris, 31, of General Street, Blackpool was not granted bail after magistrates were told he had breached the terms of previously imposed bail by visiting his alleged victim.
