Shoplifter jailed

A daughter who went off the rails while grieving over the sudden death of her father has been jailed.

Chantelle Fitton committed a series of shoplifting offences after her dad died in his sleep at the age of 60.

Fitton, 21,of Lytham Road, South Shore, pleaded guilty to two charges of theft.

At the time of the offences she was on a suspended prison sentence for several shoplifting crimes.

She was sentenced to eight weeks’ prison and ordered to pay £85 costs plus £31 compensation by Blackpool magistrates.

Presiding magistrate, Mark Cottriall, told her: “The court and probation service have tried to help you and the report we got back was very disappointing.”

Jim Mowbray, prosecuting, said Fitton stole chocolate bars and boxes valued at £53 from the Co-op in Coronation Street on June 12.

On June 24 she took men’s fragrance valued at £26 from Boots, Bank Hey Street.

Gary McAnulty, defending, said Fitton had gone off the rails after her father died suddenly and she split up with her partner for a time.

Fitton had had problems with drugs but was now on a methadone prescription. She was a vulnerable person who had not been to prison before.
