Police pelted with eggs as mob of children menace Blackpool neighbourhood

A mob of around 20 youths pelted police with eggs after officers responded to reports of anti-social behaviour in a Blackpool neighbourhood last night (Thursday, February 26).

Police came under attack at around 9pm when they visited Gorton Street, where residents had complained about a mob of children breaching lockdown and being a nuisance.

But when patrols reached the junction with Milbourne Street, the crowd of unruly youths began hurling eggs at attending officers.

It is not known how long the clash lasted, but the incident led to Blackpool Police urging parents to check on the whereabouts of their children.

"Do you know where your child is?," said the force in a social media post.

"We are currently dealing with up to 20 youths in the Gorton St area breaching Covid regs and acting in an antisocial manner including throwing eggs at attending officers."

The Gorton Street area has been a hotbed for anti-social behaviour and has seen a number of clashes between police and youths.

One worried resident said: "They've been about for hours, right outside my house - they smashed my living room and bedroom windows last June and it's the same group of kids once again.

"They caused criminal damage to my home and terrified my girlfriend who was scared to leave the house after what they had done."

The officer, who had to be hospitalised, had been trying to detain a 12-year-old near Talbot & Brunswick Children’s Centre after the boy damaged a fence.

Over the summer of 2020, a number of curfews and dispersal orders were put in place to help tackle anti-social behaviour in the area between Talbot Road and Devonshire Road.
