Pair arrested after 90-year-old woman has car stolen in Cleveleys town centre

A 22-year-old man and a boy, 17, have been arrested after a pensioner's car was stolen in Cleveleys yesterday (Thursday, February 26).

The 90-year-old woman was left shaken after her handbag was stolen, along with her car keys, by two thieves in the town centre.

The car was later spotted 15 miles away on the A6 towards Preston, where it was intercepted by police.

Two men fled the car and tried to get away on foot, but where swiftly captured by a police dog.

A 22-year-old man, from Blackpool has been arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, and a 17-year-old boy from Cleveleys was arrested on suspicion of attempted theft of a motor vehicle.

The car has now been returned, undamaged, to its elderly owner who is being supported by officers.

A police spokesman said: "Following reports of a stolen handbag and car keys in Cleveleys town centre from a 90-year-old female, the car was located on the A6 where two males made off.

"The presence of our police dog colleague convinced them that the game was up and both were arrested.

"The car has now been returned, undamaged to the victim who is being supported by officers.

"A 22-year-old man from Blackpool has been arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and a 17-year-old boy from Cleveleys was arrested on suspicion of attempted theft of a motor vehicle."
