Pair appear in court accused of causing the death of 'vulnerable' disabled woman in South Shore

Two people made their first appearance in court charged with causing the death of a young woman by starvation.

Deborah Leitch, 24, who had Down's syndrome, was found dead was found dead inside her Garden Terrace home in South Shore in September 2019.

A post mortem examination found she died from severe emaciation and neglect, with an extensive scabies skin infection.

Her mum, Elaine Clarke, 48, of Garden Terrace, is accused of manslaughter, while Robert John Bruce, 45, of Northfield Avenue, Blackpool, is accused of causing Ms Leitch’s death and failing to protect her.

Ms Leitch was described as a “wonderful girl”.

Clarke and Bruce were sent for a trial at Preston Crown Court and will appear on May 19.
