‘Miracle’ drink driver did not cause accident

Yvonne Nagy almost crashed into a bus and hit a cyclist during her wild drive one afternoon.

A British Gas engineer was so appalled by her driving he followed her and contacted police after she motored up a driveway smashing into wheelie bins.

Nagy, a 44-year-old mother, of Ridgeway Court, Shepherd Road, St Annes, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.

She was sentenced to 17 weeks prison, suspended for 12 months with up to 15 days rehabilitation to be supervised by the probation service, disqualified from driving for three years and ordered to pay a £150 court charge with £85 costs plus £80 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.

Presiding magistrate Keith Walker told her: “Your standard of driving was terrible and only a miracle stopped accidents happening.”

Pam Smith, prosecuting, said a gas engineer saw Nagy weaving round potholes on Clitheroe Road, St Annes, on September 2 at 4.30pm.

The engineer then saw her almost collide with a bus.

At Boston Road Nagy overshot a junction and stopped in the middle of the road, before mounting the pavement, turning right and narrowly missing a cyclist.

She finally turned up her driveway crashing into wheelie bins.

A blood test showed 312 milligrammes of alcohol in her body - 80 is the limit.

Bobby Bell, defending, said: “She is in essence a model citizen. She feels she has let people down.”
