Man told to pay doc for racist tirade

A patient who racially abused a doctor before pushing him in the chest as he tried to treat him has been ordered to pay the medic compensation.

Jason Hughes shouted at the doctor in the casualty department of Blackpool Victoria Hospital: “You don’t belong here – get back to your own country.”

Patrick Nelligan, defending, told the court: “He says that the doctors at Victoria Hospital have saved his life on many occasions and that he is not a racist.”

Hughes, 39, of Boston Way, Mereside, pleaded guilty to racially aggravated assault and threatening behaviour.

He was sentenced to nine months’ supervision and ordered to pay compensation of £50 to the doctor, plus £85 costs with £60 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.
