Pam Smith, prosecuting, said police were called to a disturbance in the
port’s Mowbray Road on February 1 about 6pm.

A man said that Cullen, his mother’s partner, had wanted to fight him and he had to defend himself.

Police found Cullen injured in North Church Street, but he refused to go to hospital.

Officers waited with him an hour and he kept repeating that once they left he would go and kill or injure the other man.

Cullen told magistrates: “I have been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

“I have not drunk for a couple of years, but I had had a drink that day.

“I apologise, it was out of character for me.”
