Gerard Hagan, who was arrested on the Costa Del Sol, in Spain, pleaded guilty to escaping from Kirkham Open Prison on July 6 last year.

The 29-year-old, now being held at Altcourse Prison, Liverpool, entered his plea via a prison videolink hearing with Preston Crown Court.

The court heard that back in December 2008 he had been given a 10-year sentence for possessing cocaine with intent to supply.

His lawyer, Huw Edwards, told the court: “He is keen for me to stress this was a case of absconding, rather than escaping.”

Hagan wanted to be sentenced at his plea and case management hearing yesterday, but Judge Jacqueline Beech said there was insufficient court time.

The case was put back to January 9 for sentencing.
