Knifeman’s threat to couple on pier bench

A former soldier terrified a couple on St Annes Pier when he brandished a large kitchen knife at them.

Brian Hurst repeatedly told the couple they should leave and added “I don’t want to hurt you, but I will.”

Hurst, 51, of St Davids Road South, St Annes, pleaded guilty to threatening behaviour and possessing a blade in public.

Adrian Hollamby, prosecuting, said the couple were on a bench at St Annes Pier on October 11 at 10.30pm when Hurst appeared.

He thought a vehicle nearby was a police car but the couple told him it was a paramedic’s car. The couple thought he might be drunk. Hurst appeared again, this time brandishing a large kitchen knife.

He was bailed to appear at Preston Crown Court for sentence on November 25 by Blackpool magistrates.
