Fleetwood hammer attack left man and woman 'fearful'

A man who hit a man and a woman on their heads with a hammer has been sentenced to 21 months in a young offender's institution, suspended for two years.

Dylan Shaw, 18, of Hamlet Road, Fleetwood, also got 100 hours of unpaid work, a two year restraining order, curfew and a rehabilitation requirement.

Preston Crown Court heard the incident happened in the resort on May 20 after a feud between two families.

The woman was left with a forehead wound which scarred, while the man suffered significant swelling to his face and lost teeth.

Bee shook his head as their victim impact statements were referred to, in which both said the hammer attack left them anxious and fearful.

Judge Heather Lloyd, sentencing him, said: "Whatever nastiness had been going on between the two sets of families, what you did on this night in May was serious criminal behaviour.

"It is apparent that you struck each of them to the head.

"The fact this was in the street when it was still light did not deter you.

"It appears you were fuelled by anger and drink or drugs and you had to be pulled off by a neighbour.

"That they did not sustain more serious injury is no thanks to you."

She added she was "prepared, but not without hesitation" to suspend his jail term, but added: " If you continue to take drugs and befriend those who take drugs you'll struggle to become a decent citizen.

"Bluntly you need to grow up and stay away."
