Driver arrested after car demolishes tram wall in Cleveleys, leaving debris piled up on tracks

A motorist was arrested after a car smashed into the concrete wall separating Kelso Avenue in Cleveleys from the tram track, police said.

Officers were called to the street at around 9pm yesterday, after a silver Audi A5 hit the wall - leaving debris piled up on the track.

Pictures taken at the scene showed the extent of the damage to both the car and the wall, which was left with a large hole.

The number three, four, and seven buses were diverted after police shut the road in both directions, Blackpool Transport said.

Northbound trams were terminating at Little Bispham, and southbound trams were stopping at Thornton Gate. A shuttle bus ran between the two.

A recovery truck took the car away, while workers cleared the tram-track of the debris.

The road was re-open by 10.30pm.

Robert Bond, 43, of Gresham Road, Anchorsholme, was charged with drink driving and bailed to appear at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, April 3.
