Drink driver sparked smash

Kyle Sherratt was almost three times over the alcohol limit when he smashed into the rear of another car he was trying to overtake at Kirkham and spun round.

He hit the crash barrier and ended up facing the wrong way in the fast lane. Another car then also collided with the crash barrier after the driver steered to avoid hitting Sherratt’s Nisssan 350Z.

Sherratt, 26, of Dorset Street, South Shore, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.

He was sentenced to do 150 hours unpaid work for the community, disqualified from driving for 25 months and ordered to pay £85 costs with £60 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.

Presiding magistrate, Sylvia Kirby, told him: “We feel you were a danger to the public.”

Philip Potter, prosecuting, said police went to an accident on the M55 involving three cars on November 17 at 1.41am.

Sherratt had been alone in his car. A breath test showed he had 98 micrograms of alcohol in his body - 35 is the limit.

Suzanne Mugford, defending, said her client, who had no previous convictions, had drunk some alcohol at midday.

Later he was at home and he drank some self-poured spirits, not realising how much he had drunk.

Ms Mugford added: “A lapse in judgement led to him getting into his car and driving. On the motorway he misjudged an overtake and unfortunately there was an incident with two other cars.”

Probation officer, Paul Nelson, who prepared a report on Sherratt, told magistrates: “The reason the defendant was driving was unbelievable to me. He was going to a friend’s home to get a Super Mario game for his Wii.”
