Boys, 14, arrested after 89-year-old is attacked in St Annes Aldi car park

A pair of 14-year-old boys have been arrested after an 89-year-old man was attacked in a supermarket car park in St Annes yesterday (Thursday, February 25).

The pensioner was left with a broken hip after the attack outside Aldi in Clifton Drive at around 8.10am.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance, where he remains today (Friday, February 26).

Police swiftly identified two suspects - both aged 14 and from St Annes - who were taken to a local police station for questioning.

They have since been arrested on suspicion of GBH (grievous bodily harm) and remain in custody.

Lancashire Police is asking anyone with information that might help their investigation to contact them.

A police spokesman said: "We are aware of concerns on social media regarding an assault in St Annes this morning and just wanted to update you on the latest developments.

"We were called just before 8.10am to a report that an 89-year-old man had been assaulted in the Aldi car park in Clifton Drive.

"He has been taken to hospital for treatment on a suspected fractured hip.

"Following swift enquiries officers identified two suspects who have since been arrested on suspicion of GBH.

"The two boys – aged 14 and 14 who are both from St Annes – are currently in custody."
