Brian Hulme was rolling his head and rocking his body as he motored in a circle around a car park on February 9 about 11pm.

When stopped he claimed he was being chased by people in 12 cars and admitted he had taken what he termed “a bomb” of the drug amphetamine.

Pam Smith, prosecuting, said: “He was making very strange body movement, moving his head and body constantly. Both officers said he looked possessed.”

Hulme, a 46-year-old HGV driver, of Bournemouth Road, South Shore, pleaded guilty to driving while unfit through drugs.

The prosecutor added that a blood test showed 350 units of amphetamine in his body – 250 is the specified limit, due to its use in some medicines.

Brett Chappell, defending, said his client, who had no previous convictions, was an HGV professional driver who had a clean licence.

Hulme got to breaking point after his father was diagnosed with cancer and his mother found that very hard to come to terms with.

At the same time his relationship with his partner and children broke down.

An acquaintance told him amphetamine would help bring his emotions under control.

So Hulme took the drug for the first time and it had an adverse effect on him. He had now seen his doctor and was getting help for his problems, the court was told.

Hulme was banned from the road for 12 months and fined £120 with £85 costs plus £20 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.
