Collapsed wall may lead to cafe demolition

The outside wall of the Lowery Cafe on Coronation Street partially crumbled last week, leading to road closures between Adelaide Street and Albert Road.

Now a Blackpool Council spokesman has revealed that the wall could be demolished after it collapsed even further on Monday morning.

The whole wall has now collapsed onto the street, and the roof and upper floor of the building has been damaged.

A council spokesman today said: “Building control and demolition contractors are at the scene to assess the situation.

“The exterior wall could potentially be demolished.”

They added that it is not currently known how long road closures will be in place surrounding the cafe.

Adelaide Street has been opened up to two-way traffic.

In a Facebook post made last week after the initial collapse of the wall, a Lowery Cafe spokesmand said: “I got a phone call from the police at 2.30am to tell me to come to the cafe . A large part of the exterior wall had collapsed onto the street.

“The council have had to shut Coronation Street in case the rest of the wall collapses.

“Unfortunately this means we will be closed until the building is made safe.

“Hopefully this will be done quickly by the landlord and we will be able to reopen as soon as possible.”
