Children's dance fest proves a hit at ballroom

Young dancers from all corners of the globe gathered at the Winter Gardens' famous ballroom in the hope of winning a title at the world's biggest junior dance competition.

The Blackpool Junior Dance Festival took place at the Empress Ballroom and saw more than 1,200 children aged five to 15-years-old compete in ballroom, Latin American and sequence dance-offs.

The competition celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.

Fesitval organiser Sandra Wilson said: “We have got the junior and juvenile ballroom championships, the sequence championships and the Lation championships.

“The majority of competitors here are from overseas.

“It’s a very high standard competition and it’s the main championship for juniors and juveniles throughout the world.”

The festival finished yesterday, after 34 lucky winners were awarded prizes for their dancing talents.

Sandra said: “It’s a great atmosphere with the children. They are well-supported by parents and teachers that come with them and they are very supportive of each other.

“The children love it, they love dancing in the ballroom and being in Blackpool.”
