Car fire causes rush hour chaos

Fire crews from St Annes Fire Station were called to the blaze on Queensway in St Annes at around 8am yesterday.

A Vauxhall Corsa had caught fire on the southbound carriageway, causing the road to be closed for several hours.

St Annes Fire Station watch manager Steve Barnes said the fire started after an issue with the car’s engine.

He added: “We were called to the incident shortly after 8am, and when we arrived it was already a fully developed fire.

“With a hose reel and jet we managed to extinguish the flames.

“It seemed the driver of the car had had an issue with a tyre, with the fire starting in the engine area.

“The driver got out safely.”

The road closure caused long delays for drivers in the area, with motorists forced to use Clifton Drive North to travel between St Annes and Blackpool.

Drivers have been left with only two routes between the towns after the closure of the Moss Road, also known as Wild Lane, by Lancashire County Council.
