"I’m so grateful for the treatment and I just want to give something back”

A St Annes man who has undergone cancer treatment is raising funds for charity - by bringing musical entertainment to care home residents.

Philip Moon was left with both bladder and bowel stomas after being treated for bladder and bowel cancer at the Christie Hospital in Manchester and has been keen since to boost Macmillan Cancer Support’s funds.

Last autumn, he took his first skydive to help the charity, now he has set up a Just Giving page with a £3,000 target - and is looking for venues and groups which might help his fund-raising efforts as as he plays music, to benefit others as well as entertanment.

“Basically, I turn up with my speakers and play nostalgic music (50’s/60’s etc) to care home residents for around two hours,” said Philip, a retired advertising executive.

“Having done research on the effects music can have for older people particularly those suffering with dementia, I thought this would be a great way to help plus raise money towards my Macmillan target.

Philip’s cancer journey started when he had a kidney stone problem and his hospital specialist advised that he had an operation to remove it as a matter of urgency just as he was about to go on holiday.

In preparation for that, he had a colonoscopy and the cancer was found as a thickening of the colon.

During an operation to remove that, doctors found the cancer had spread to the edge of his bladder and that was removed, leading to the stomas being fitted.
